Overview
Held on the margins of the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), this side event will explore how regional organisations can accelerate progress towards gender parity in political decision-making at national level. While women’s representation has increased incrementally over the past decades, stagnation and mobilisation against gender equality are becoming the “new normal”. In this context, CEDAW General Recommendation No. 40 (2024) provides a roadmap for achieving gender parity across all levels of public life, including by calling for decisive action to prevent and respond to violence that excludes women from politics. Regional organisations are well placed to translate these global norms into region-specific standards, incentives and peer learning that speed national adoption and implementation.
Focus of the event
The side event will highlight how regional organisations help convert global commitments into national results by setting standards, offering model legal provisions and practical guidance, providing comparative evidence, and supporting programmes that parliaments, governments and political parties can adopt. It will feature concrete regional tools and approaches, including ODIHR’s Gender Parity Roadmap (2025) and initiatives from the EU and other regional and parliamentary bodies.
Objectives
This side event aims to present practical regional tools and programmes that States can adopt to advance gender parity at national level. It will also share examples of national reforms informed by regional standards, including changes to electoral frameworks, party selection procedures, local parity measures and provisions addressing violence against women in political life. In addition, the event seeks to strengthen exchange among States, regional organisations and stakeholders on effective approaches to translating commitments into measurable progress.
Participants
The event is intended for Member State delegations, parliamentarians, political party representatives, electoral authorities, equality bodies, civil society organisations and international organisations.
