Early parliamentary elections, 28 October 2017

Type:
Election expert team
Country:
Iceland
Election Dates:
28 October 2017

Following an invitation from the authorities of Iceland, and based on the findings and conclusions of a Needs Assessment Mission (NAM), ODIHR has deployed an Election Expert Team (EET) for the 28 October early parliamentary elections.

Mission Activities

The EET began its work on 18 October and includes two international experts, drawn from two OSCE participating States.

The EET will assess the electoral process for its compliance with OSCE commitments, other international obligations and standards for democratic elections, as well as national legislation. Experts will, in particular, review the effects that the interaction between various bodies in charge of administering elections has on a uniformity and consistency of the process, and the oversight of campaign finance.

In line with ODIHR’s methodology, the EET will not carry out systematic or comprehensive observation of voting, counting, or tabulation on election day. Team members will, however, visit a small number of polling stations across the country to follow election day procedures.

The team will remain in Iceland until 31 October. A final report will be issued approximately eight weeks after the end of the electoral process.

Previous Elections

The OSCE/ODIHR previously assessed the parliamentary elections in Iceland in 2009 and 2013.
