OSCE/ODIHR presents assessment of Montenegrin electoral legislation

PODGORICA, 9 August 2002 - The OSCE Office in Montenegro today delivered to the Montenegrin Parliament and parliamentary party representatives an assessment by the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) on the amendments to the legislative framework for elections.

Ambassador Gerard Stoudmann, the Director of ODIHR, indicated in a covering letter to Vesna Perovic, Speaker of the Montenegrin Parliament, the willingness of international experts from the OSCE to remain engaged with the Montenegrin Parliament in finding solutions based on the OSCE's recommendations to address the issue of the legislative and institutional framework for Montenegro's upcoming elections.

Ambassador Stoudmann also expressed the readiness of OSCE experts to return to Montenegro in the course of next week to resume discussions with the Montenegrin Parliament.

The OSCE/ODIHR assessment is the result of a meeting that took place on 1 August in the Montenegrin Parliament on electoral and elections-related media legislation.
