About
The programme of this year's 10th edition of the National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) Academy focuses on the NHRI mandate when addressing challenges to the rule of law (RoL). With backsliding on the rule of law across the OSCE region, the central role that NHRIs play in upholding it has become more critical than ever.
This one-week course will provide participants with a toolkit for:
- Understanding better the key rule of law challenges, and how they relate to human rights and democracy;
- Using the broad human rights mandate of NHRIs to address rule of law challenges;
- Engaging with relevant regional mechanisms to address rule of law challenges at the national level.
Other topics to be addressed are related to the independence of NHRIs, including mainstreaming the Principles Relating to the Status of National Human Rights Institutions (Paris Principles), and prioritizing gender in the work of NHRIs.
Participants
The course is designed for senior and mid-level staff from NHRIs across the OSCE region. Participants will be trained to:
- address particular challenges they face in their work;
- fulfill their institution’s mandate to promote and protect human rights more effectively.
The training is only open to pre-selected participants.
Why is it important?
The NHRI Academy is a flagship annual event by ODIHR and ENNHRI.
The long-term goals of this capacity building event are to:
- provide a long-standing resource for the continuing professional development of NHRI staff;
- support professional networking between NHRIs in the OSCE region, and between NHRIs, ODIHR, ENNHRI and other stakeholders and organizations.
