About
ODIHR’s Human Rights Department is hosting a webinar to discuss the detailed policy recommendations on how to effectively address and eliminate incentives for torture in the OSCE region. This online event marks the launch of the Ukrainian version of ODIHR’s and Fair Trials joint publication on this topic.
Role of civil society
Civil society organizations from across Ukraine are invited to take part and play a key role. They are in a position to provide valuable insight on the incentives for torture in the Ukrainian criminal justice system, discuss how they can advocate for the recommendations in ODIHR/Fair Trials’ publication, and share good practices and ideas for multi-stakeholder collaboration to eradicate the remaining incentives.
Speakers
This webinar will last two hours and will consist of a moderated panel discussion. Subject to allocated time, the moderator will provide a space for participants to ask questions. English and Ukrainian interpretation will be available.
Panelists will include:
- Bruno Min, Fair Trials
- Dmytro Yagunov, attorney-at-law and national consultant for the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT)
- Marina Ilminska, Open Society Justice Initiative
- Andrew Chernousov, Kharkiv Institute of Social Research
- Marharyta Tarasova, Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union
Why is this important
In their OSCE Human Dimension Commitments, participating States have explicitly and unequivocally pledged to uphold the absolute prohibition of torture and other ill-treatment and have committed themselves to strive for its elimination. However, the use of torture and other ill-treatment continues to be a problem in criminal justice systems across the OSCE region.
Background
This webinar is part of ODIHR’s work on torture prevention and ODIHR’s project on “Advancing the Human Dimension of Security in Ukraine.”
