About the event
Across the OSCE region, violence against women in politics remains a serious barrier to women’s full, equal and effective participation in political and public life. It is used to discourage women from entering politics, to shorten political careers and to limit women’s influence on decision-making, undermining representative democracy and violating human rights.
To address this challenge, ODIHR is holding a side event on Addressing Violence Against Women in Politics in the OSCE Region on the margins of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Winter Session. The event is hosted by the Delegations of the United Kingdom and North Macedonia to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
The side event will present key findings and practical guidance from ODIHR’s Addressing Violence against Women in Politics in the OSCE Region: Toolkit, including insights from Tool 6: Experiences and Coping Strategies of Women in Politics, based on interviews with women politicians from across the OSCE region. Discussions will focus on the forms and impact of violence, coping strategies, and what institutions can do to provide support and ensure accountability.
The event aims to encourage OSCE participating States and national parliaments to strengthen institutional responses to violence against women in politics and to better protect women’s participation in democratic life.
Who can take part
Members of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
Participation is by invitation only.
