Election assessment mission
Parliamentary Elections, 10 June 2007
Following an invitation from the Permanent Delegation of Belgium to the OSCE, and the conduct of a needs assessment mission from 25-27 April, the ODIHR deployed an election assessment mission ahead of the 10 June 2007 parliamentary elections.
The mission, led by Ambassador Lubomir Kopaj (Slovakia) included 10 election experts.
The purpose of the mission was to assess and report on the overall framework for the conduct of elections in Belgium with regard to OSCE commitments for holding democratic elections. The experts met with relevant governmental authorities, candidates, political parties, civil society and the media. The use of electronic voting systems as used in Belgium was among the issues of interest.
The ODIHR did not carry out a systematic or comprehensive observation of the voting, counting and tabulation on election day, but the team of experts did visit several polling stations across the country to follow procedures.
The ODIHR carried out an expert study visit during the 8 October 2006 local elections in Belgium.
