BUJANOVAC, 10 July 2002 - The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has deployed an Election Observation Mission to monitor the 28 July municipal elections in the municipalities of Bujanovac, Medvedja and Presevo in the Republic of Serbia/Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

"By observing these elections, we hope to contribute to the process of reintegration of the entire population of the region into the democratic structures of Serbia", said Nikolai Vulchanov (Bulgaria), the Head of the Election Observation Mission.

The Mission, which includes four experts based in Bujanovac, will assess whether the election process is in line with relevant OSCE commitments and Serbian legislation. In addition, it will closely monitor the election campaign and the coverage of the campaign in the media.

Shortly before the election, additional observers will be deployed to monitor election day procedures, including voting, counting of ballots, hand-over of polling station results, and vote tabulation at all levels.

On the day after the election, the Election Observation Mission will issue a statement of preliminary findings and conclusions. A comprehensive report will be issued by the ODIHR approximately one month after the completion of the electoral process.

The Election Observation Mission operates separately from the OSCE Mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and its South Serbia Co-ordination Office in Bujanovac.
