OSCE/ODIHR election observers to stay in Albania for 22 July vote

WARSAW, 13 July 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has decided that OSCE/ODIHR election observers will remain in Albania to monitor the election process and the preparations and conduct of voting on 22 July. The decision came following the second round of the parliamentary elections on 8 July, which could not be completed in a number of constituencies due to various irregularities.
"In view of the particular importance of these elections for the development of democracy in Albania, we decided to extend our observation mission", said ODIHR Director Gerard Stoudmann. "We hope the election process, including both the remaining balloting and the appeals procedure, will be completed without undue delay and in full accordance with international standards."
The ODIHR Election Observation Mission was established in late May. The Mission observed the first and the second round of the Albanian parliamentary elections on 24 June and 8 July. The preliminary statements on the first two rounds are available on the ODIHR website.
