Improving quality of legislation focus of OSCE/ODIHR workshop in Serbia

Ways of improving the quality of legislation both before and after its adoption were the subject of a workshop organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights in Belgrade on 22 and 23 April 2013.

With the support of experts from Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom, representatives of the National Assembly of Serbia, government ministries and independent institutions learned how monitoring the implementation of laws and the evaluation of legislation can improve the quality of lawmaking.

“Assessing the legislation in force is one of the more difficult tasks for policymakers and legislators, but it provides the opportunity to ensure that laws are serving their stated purpose,” said Marta Achler, the Chief of ODIHR’s Legislative Support Unit.

The workshop is the third of its kind organized in co-operation with the National Assembly and supported by the OSCE Mission to Serbia to address the recommendations contained in the “Assessment of the Law Drafting and Legislative Process of the Republic of Serbia” published by ODIHR in February 2012.
