Warsaw to host conference on role of democratic institutions

WARSAW, 10 May 2004 - Challenges to the democratic process in both developing and established democracies will be the focus of a three-day conference in the Polish capital of Warsaw, beginning Wednesday, 12 May. The event is organized by the OSCE's Bulgarian Chairmanship and its Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
The conference will host some 200 participants, who will examine how democratic institutions function, paying particular attention to topics such as ways to strengthen law-making, the role of public administration, links between governments and citizens, and participation in non-governmental organizations.
The meeting will also focus on co-operation between democratic institutions, including governments, legislative bodies, political parties, human rights institutions, the public service, and the media.
Opening speakers include Jakub Wolski, Polish Under-Secretary of State; Konstantin Andreev, representative of the OSCE Chairmanship; Rolf Ekeus, OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities; Professor Jürg Steiner, Swiss Chair of the European University Institute; Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, President Emeritus, European Commission for Democracy through Law; and Ambassador Christian Strohal, Director of the OSCE/ODIHR.
Bruce George, MP, President of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, will make closing remarks on Friday, 14 May.
The seminar will get under way at the Hotel Sofitel Victoria, ul. Krolewska 11, at 10:00, on 12 May and is open to all media.
