WARSAW, 30 January 2002 - The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) today expressed its concern about the continued detention of Azimbek Beknazarov, Chairman of the Committee on Judicial and Legal Affairs of the Kyrgyz parliament.
"We urge the Kyrgyz authorities to release Mr. Beknazarov and allow for an impartial, transparent and independent investigation of his case", said ODIHR Director Ambassador Gerard Stoudmann.
Azimbek Beknazarov, whose arrest on 5 January sparked widespread public protest in Kyrgyzstan, is accused of abuse of power related to a case he handled as investigator for a district prosecutor's office in 1995.
"There is an imminent risk of further deterioration of the internal situation in case the authorities should not take all necessary measures to quickly resolve this case in line with Kyrgyzstan's commitments as an OSCE participating State", said Ambassador Stoudmann.
