Presidential Election, 2 April 2017

Following an official invitation to observe the presidential election in the Republic of Serbia, scheduled for 2 April 2017, and in accordance with its mandate, the OSCE/ODIHR has deployed an Election Assessment Mission (EAM) for this election.

The OSCE/ODIHR EAM began its work in the Republic of Serbia on 21 March. The mission is led by Ambassador Alexandre Keltchewsky, and consists of five international experts from five OSCE participating States, based in Belgrade. The mission's deployment follows an invitation from the Serbian authorities.

The mission will assess the electoral process for compliance with OSCE commitments and other international obligations and standards for democratic elections, as well as national legislation. Observers will, in particular, look into issues such as the legal framework, voter registration, the campaign environment and its coverage in the media as well as complaints and appeals procedures.

In line with the OSCE/ODIHR methodology, the OSCE/ODIHR EAM will not carry out systematic or comprehensive observation of voting, counting and tabulation on election day. Mission members will, however, visit a small number of polling stations on election day.

A final report will be issued approximately eight weeks after the end of the electoral process.

The OSCE/ODIHR EAM and the OSCE Mission in Serbia operate separately under their specific mandates.

The OSCE/ODIHR has previously observed 13 elections in Serbia, most recently the 2016 early parliamentary elections.
