About

During these two one-day training seminars, around 25 defence counsel from the municipalities of Pejë/Peć and Prishtinë/Priština will receive training on substantive international criminal and humanitarian law, and advanced trial advocacy skills for war crimes cases. The general elements needed to develop a case strategy for war crimes cases, including issues such as investigation, examination, and appeals, will be addressed in light of international law and practice as well as the law and practice in Kosovo.

The seminar will be led by Gregor D. Guy-Smith, ICTY defence counsel.

The two training seminars are the first events being organized in 2013 under the framework of the War Crimes Justice Project – Phase II: “Supporting the transfer of knowledge in war crimes cases among the national jurisdictions of the former Yugoslavia and with the ICTY”.

The training seminar will utilize the international criminal law training curriculum and the Manual on International Criminal Defence, which were developed under the European Commission-funded War Crimes Justice Project – Phase I. This phase of the project was implemented by the OSCE/ODIHR in partnership with the ICTY, the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and OSCE field operations, and completed in October 2011.
