Held on the margins of 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), this side event will highlight women’s equal and meaningful participation as a precondition for peace, security and inclusive governance, contributing to CSW70’s focus on access to justice for all women and girls and women’s full and effective participation in public life. Building on the Women, Peace and Security agenda, including UNSCR 1325 (2000), the discussion will focus on practical steps to strengthen women’s leadership and participation in peace and security decision-making at local, national and international levels, while addressing persistent barriers, including threats, intimidation and gender-based violence targeting women leaders and women human rights defenders. ODIHR will highlight in its contribution the importance of gender parity in national politics. See latest info on the side event at the official CSW side events page.
This side event aims to
- Strengthen understanding of why women’s meaningful participation improves prevention, response and recovery outcomes;
- Identify practical measures that governments, parliaments, security institutions and international and regional organisations can take to advance women’s leadership and participation, including at local level;
- Highlight effective approaches to protection and access to justice for women and girls in conflict and post-conflict settings, including safeguarding women human rights defenders and women peacebuilders.
