Fighting terrorism, respect for human rights focus of OSCE meeting in Baku

BAKU, 30 April 2003 - An OSCE meeting has opened today in the Azeri capital, Baku, focusing on the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1373, which calls for States to co-operate in the global struggle against terrorism.
One of the key issues on the meeting's agenda is the need to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms while preventing and combating terrorism.
Opening the meeting this morning, Ambassador Peter Burkhard, the Head of the OSCE Office in Baku, said: "The Government of Azerbaijan should be congratulated for its forward-looking and proactive stance in implementing the resolution and for its willingness to play a model role in this field."
Peter Keay, Co-ordinator on Anti-Terrorism Issues at the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) commented: "With its comprehensive approach to security, the OSCE is well placed to provide support to the Government of Azerbaijan in its efforts to promote regional co-operation and take measures to prevent and combat terrorism."
Representatives from the Government of Azerbaijan, the civil society and relevant United Nations institutions are attending the event, which is co-organized by the ODIHR and the OSCE Office in Baku.
